How to publish changes to the banner
Learn how to make the changes you've made to the banner configuration appear on your site.
Changes you make in the banner editor in the panel aren't visible to visitors straight away. To publish them, you need to click the “Publish changes” button. Below you'll find instructions on how to do this, why the effect may only be visible after a few minutes, and when visitors will see the banner again.
How to publish changes to the banner
- Open the Cookie banner page in the panel and make the changes you want to the appearance and content.
- Check the texts in the default language and make sure the URL of your privacy policy is correct.
- Click the “Publish changes” button in the editor header (or “Save and publish” if you are on the last step).
Verification: open the site in an incognito window. The banner should appear.
How the draft works
[Screenshot: draft bar in the banner editor]
Until you click “Publish changes”, a draft bar appears at the top of the editor, showing when the draft was saved and that the previous version of the banner is running on your site.
The draft is saved only in your browser. If you open the editor on another computer, your draft won't be there.
Next to the draft bar you'll find the “Discard the draft and go back to the published version” button. Clicking it deletes the saved draft and restores the settings that are currently active on your site.
Why the change isn't visible straight away
The banner configuration is kept in the visitor's browser storage, and our script refreshes it in the background once every five minutes. The new version of the banner appears only on the next visit to the site, not immediately after you publish your changes.
To speed this up:
- Refresh the page twice.
- If you still see the old version, open the site in an incognito window. In incognito mode the browser has no saved settings, so the script will fetch the latest configuration directly from the server.
- Check whether the site has any caching plugins that may delay the update.
When visitors see the banner again
Not every change to the banner requires showing it to visitors again. Cosmetic changes (e.g. button colour, text corrections) don't invalidate earlier consents. A material change (affecting consent categories or the list of scripts) increases the consent version, so the banner will appear again.
You can also renew consents manually (from the Basic plan upwards). This is handled by the “Renew user consents” row on the Settings page, with the “Renew now” button. This feature isn't available on the Free plan.
Mistakes to avoid
- Don't forget to publish your changes. Settings saved in the editor without clicking “Publish changes” won't affect how the banner looks on your site.
- Publishing sends the settings to us, but the banner will appear only once the code from the Installation tab is on your site.
- Don't check the result in the same tab where consent was accepted earlier.
- Don't leave another provider's banner in place. If another banner is already running on your site, visitors may see two banners at the same time.
