Project ID: what it is and where to find it
Where to find the ID in the panel, and what to do if you have several projects.
The project ID links the code on your site to the configuration in the panel. This is how we fetch the right banner with your settings and assign visitors' consents to the correct project. Below are the places where you can find it, and the rules worth remembering if you have many projects on your account.
Where do I find the project ID?
The ID is available in three places and is always the same.
List of all projects. Leave the project and go to your account, then open the Projects and domains section. The ID is in the “ID” column, next to the project name and the plan. This is the fastest way when you manage many projects.
Project header. Select a project and go to the Dashboard. The ID appears at the top of the screen, next to the project's main domain. Click the string of characters itself or the icon next to it, and the message “Copied” will appear.
Installation page. Select a project and go to Installation. With the Google Tag Manager setup, you'll find the ID in the “Value for the template” section, in the “Project ID (data-co-id)” field, with a “Copy” button. With the “Code on the site” method there's no separate field; the ID is contained in the ready-made code, as the value of data-co-id.
Always copy the ID with the button or the icon; don't retype it by hand. It's 23 characters long.
What does the ID look like?
It starts with the prefix co-, followed by a string of 20 characters: lowercase letters and digits. We write it as co-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX - yours is unique and you'll find it in the panel. In the code on your site it appears as the value of the data-co-id attribute, and in the Google Tag Manager template you enter it in the field with the same name.
Don't confuse it with the organisation ID, which starts with org- and appears in the project list under the organisation name. An organisation groups projects, but its ID never goes into the site code.
Does the ID change?
No. It stays the same for the whole life cycle of the project, even after the main domain is changed.
The exception is moving a domain to another project. The domain then comes under a new ID, and the panel will remind you to replace the code. Until the code is replaced, the banner runs on the existing configuration.
Is the ID confidential?
No. It appears in the source code of every page with the banner. The ID alone doesn't allow anyone to change the configuration or read the Consent Log. Access to the panel is protected by a login, and integrations use a separate API key.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't copy the ID from another project. This is the most common mistake when managing a large number of projects.
- The ID consists only of lowercase letters and digits. If you see a capital letter in it, you're copying something else.
- Don't confuse it with the organisation ID. Code with a value starting with
org-won't work.
