How to analyse your site scan results

Find out how to analyse a site scan report and what to do with the cookies it detects.

A site scan checks which data and tracking tools are used on your website. The result shows the actual state of things as revealed by the audit. Below you'll find out how to start the analysis, what to do with unclassified items and how to compare subsequent scans.

Where to start analysing the result

  1. Open the Cookies section.
  2. Review the category filters. The “Unclassified” filter contains cookies that we didn't recognise automatically. Until you assign them a category, the banner can't block them.

What the list of detected cookies contains

The list is grouped into category cards. Each row in the list contains:

ElementContents
Namee.g. _ga, with information about the provider and the kind (e.g. Google Analytics, HTTP cookie)
CategoryNecessary, Analytics, Marketing, Functional or Unclassified
First-party/Third-partyWhether the cookie comes from your own domain or from an external one
LifetimeHow long the cookie stays on the device (e.g. 2 years, session)
PurposeWhat the cookie is used for (a description from the catalogue or your own)

You'll see the domain that sets the item after clicking the row, or in the CSV export.

What to do with unclassified cookies

  1. Click the “Unclassified” filter above the list.
  2. For each cookie, expand the category list and choose the right one.
  3. Wait for the message “Category saved.”
  4. Repeat for the remaining items until the filter is empty.

If the same cookie exists in different variants (e.g. for yourcompany.com and shop.yourcompany.com), the message will show the number of variants, and the chosen category will be assigned to all of them.

Your decisions take priority and stay unchanged after subsequent scans.

How to analyse the scan history

In the Scan history tab you'll find badges that summarise the changes:

BadgeMeaning
First scanThere is no previous result to compare with
No changesThe same cookies as before
+3 new3 new cookies
−2 removed2 fewer cookies than before
Attempt failedThe scan failed
Partial measurementFewer subpages than usual
Different measurement scopeDifferent subpages than before

New cookies are confirmed only after two subsequent scans. This way, temporary tools (e.g. campaign pixels) don't stay in the inventory permanently.

What mistakes to avoid

  • Don't assign all cookies to “Necessary” in order to simplify the banner. This is a common mistake found during inspections.
  • Also check the entries in the browser's storage. In the list they have the kind “Browser local storage” and are subject to consent in the same way as regular cookies.
